Sir Alex Ferguson was integral in ensuring Scott McTominay had a future with both Manchester United and Scotland.
McTominay has burst onto the scene this season, featuring heavily in the first team under Jose Mourinho.
His performances earned acclaim on the international scene too, as both Scotland and England sought to get him to declare for them.
The midfielder confirmed he wished to play for Scotland last week, and his grandfather says both Ferguson and Mourinho deserve praise for their help in developing McTominay.
âAlex McLeish handled the situation quite well,â the 83-year-old said. âItâs been rumbling on now for two or three months now in the papers. But he didnât go shouting and bawling. He just said that he would speak to Scott and he did. He conducted himself quite well.
âBut Sir Alex Ferguson was keen for Scott to play for Scotland as well. He was up front about it. I know that for a fact. I can say that without fear of getting contradicted. That has been kept under wraps. He and Jose Mourinho were both quite keen on it over the last month or two.
âSir Alex Ferguson has been very good with Scott over the years. He gave him his first contract with Manchester United when he was 16 before he retired and then made sure it was extended when he was 18. He seems to get on well with him. I have seen them talking.
âHeâs been at Manchester since he was about six years of age. They have been very, very good with him.
âHe was very small for a long time. But a few years ago he had a massive growth spurt. He didnât play any football in that time. He was in the gym working under physiotherapists and doctors.
âJose Mourinho has done very well with him,. He has been very, very good with him indeed. Heâs given him a right good run, six games on the trot. He has played against Benfica, CSKA Moscow and Sevilla in Europe this season.
âI like the way heâs been treated.â
