Manchester United are ‘sceptical’ about Ronaldo’s possible return to the club and are advancing with ‘circumspection’, according to Jose Mourinho’s biggest journalist fan Duncan Castles.

There is a school of thought that Ronaldo has only started making noises about leaving Real Madrid in an effort to force the Spanish club to pay his tax bill, and United are cautious about being made to look foolish.

Castles claims in the Daily Record that PSG ‘have been more aggressive in their own efforts to provide Ronaldo with an escape from Spain’, while Inter Milan are also interested.

Ronaldo has indicated that he would return to Manchester United, who are targeting an elite striker this summer.

Somebody close to the Portuguese goal machine is quoted as saying: “To go back to England there is only one club. Cristiano has to respect his past.”

Reports earlier on Tuesday in the Daily Mail describe United as both ‘wary’ and ‘cautious’, with United putting more effort into signing Mourinho’s original targets of Alvaro Morata and Ivan Perisic.
