Thierry Henry does not know why Manchester United are playing Anthony Martial in such a wide position.
The Arsenal legend analysed the Frenchman’s role in the weekend’s 2-1 loss to Norwich City on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football and could not quite believe it when he looked at a heat map of Martial’s activity during the match.
“What are you doing here? I actually do not know what he is doing there,” Henry said when reading into Martial’s performance.
“He should be there [in the penalty area], having a one versus one, scoring and celebrating. Is it fear? Is it because they have been brainwashed a bit too much? I just don’t get it.
“They wanted a guy who scored goals. They wanted a guy to run in behind fast. He came in and did that. Suddenly now he finds himself out there, almost not touching the ball.
“I think if I had a player like that, he would be my No 9 and the rest are around him.”
Martial, who scored in the defeat at Old Trafford, hit the ground running for United after joining from Monaco with four goals in his first four outings but has netted just three times since for a struggling United side.
