De Gea hoping to recreate Atletico’s Europa League glory with United

David De Gea has stated his ambition of wanting to claim glory in the Europa League with Manchester United.

United were embarrassingly knocked out of the group stages of the Champions League and will now be competing in Europe’s second tier competition for the remainder of the 2015/16 season.

Many feel that having to participate in the Europa League is United’s punishment for failing to make it past their group but goalkeeper De Gea is excited regarding the competition and has stated that he wants to win the trophy once again after claiming glory in the competition before with Atletico Madrid.

De Gea said: “It’s an enjoyable competition to play in. I have great memories when I won in the final.

“But this is Manchester United and while we’ve been knocked out of the Champions League , we are now in another competition and we will be trying to win it in just the same way.

“It’s a long competition and just a bit different to what we are used to playing in, with the games on a Thursday instead of Tuesday or Wednesday, and that can change your regime a little bit.

“But I think we are prepared and we will be having a real go at winning it.”

“We’ve got a tricky tie (against Danish side Midtjylland on February 18 and 25) but then any opponent at this stage of this competition is going to be a difficult one.”

“When you win a trophy and a special trophy at that you always celebrate. I was certainly excited to have won it and I celebrated.”

“It is something that I will never forget.”
