Kluivert backs Van Gaal and Memphis to come good

Former Netherlands international Patrick Kluivert has backed Louis Van Gaal to turn things around at Manchester United.

The Red Devils are currently enduring a bad run of form and sit in fifth position, six points behind fourth-placed Manchester City after a 2-1 loss to relegation fighters Sunderland on Sunday.

Kluivert also believes that the Dutch winger Memphis Depay will show his worth for the club after a poor debut season at Old Trafford so far.

The former Barcelona forward worked with Van Gaal as a member of his backroom staff for Netherlands during the World Cup in 2014.

Van Gaal has been under scrutiny after his side’s poor performance in all competitions this year, with notable failures coming early on in both the Champions League and Capital One Cup, but the promotion of youth players to the first team has been a rare positive.

Speaking with fifa.com, Kluivert insisted that “he’s a coach who knows how to motivate young players in order for them to bring their qualities to the team.”

Kluivert also believes that: “at a club of that size, people want immediate results, but it’s not that easy,” adding “United are in fifth now and the coach is always the first to get the blame for a bad run.”

There has been a lot of speculation about Van Gaal’s future at the club, but Kluivert was keen to stress that the United manager “has got so much quality and I hope he can turn the situation around.”

The other Dutchman who has been criticised heavily is summer signing Memphis Depay.

The winger was one of the best players in the Dutch Eredivisie as he scored 22 league goals last term. He has been enduring a tough start to his United career, though, putting in sub-par performances and losing his place in the starting eleven.

Kluivert insisted that “Memphis is a player with huge quality and that’s not something you lose, even at times like these,” going on to say that Depay’s dip in form is simply down to confidence and needing time to adapt to a new city and playing style.
