Van Gaal urging United to lift themselves out of losing run at Shrewsbury

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has urged his players to break the club’s losing streak when they face League One Club Shrewsbury Town in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Monday night.

The Red Devils have lost consecutive games against Sunderland and FC Midtjylland and a win at New Meadow will earn United a home quarter-final tie against West Ham United in the cup.

He said: “The question is how we lift ourselves for this game, because Shrewsbury Town shall also fight for the second balls, play direct and that kind of thing, and we have to cope with that.

“We have to keep the ball better and not give unnecessary losses away, because I think the first goal [against Midtjylland] was an unnecessary loss and the second goal we could have won that duel much easier.”
