Manchester United will make David de Gea ‘the highest-paid goalkeeper in the world’ when he signs his new contract.
United have fought to keep De Gea for around five years, with Real Madrid expressing an interest in the goalkeeper on several occasions.
The Spaniard signed a new contract with the club in 2015, shortly after Real’s most high-profile approach publicly collapsed.
De Gea’s importance to United has only grown since, and he reclaimed his Player of the Year award at a ceremony last month.
According to Spanish newspaper Marca, United are intent on rewarding his improving form, and will make him ‘the highest paid goalkeeper in the world’ as a result.
Negotiations between club and player have been ongoing since the start of the calendar year, but are drawing to a conclusion.
De Gea will be offered a five-year deal where he will earn an annual wage of €21m.
The current best-paid shot-stopper is Manuel Neuer of Bayern Munich, who earns €15m a year.
