The “big five” in the Premier League met recently to discuss the possibility of an European league, and Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is not a fan of the idea.
The purpose of the meeting was to debate changes to the Champions League, amid discussion across Europe about the future of the competition and proposals that could include guaranteed entry for the biggest teams.
“Everybody knows, I am against all the Super League,” said Van Gaal.
“Sport is to be the best. When the Champions League existed, I said it was rubbish because the second, third and fourth teams go in.
“It was a competition between champions. I said it 20 years ago and I say it now. Only thinking commercially is it different. Sport is to win, not to be second or third.”
