Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is happy having Juan Mata as stand-in captain.
Van Gaal has admitted it was “an easy decision” to name Mata as Manchester United captain for the midweek win over Watford.
Mata was the hero as Manchester United extended their winning run to four games.
The Spaniard stepped up to whip home a stunning free-kick in the closing stages at Old Trafford, helping Louis van Gaal’s men to a hard-earned win over Watford.
“It was not difficult because I have an elder group of players with whom I’m talking about aspects of things – training sessions, meetings or how we have to approach players and so on.
“Juan is a member of that group with the three captains – Rooney, Carrick and Smalling – and [Bastian] Schweinsteiger as well, so it was an easy choice for me.”
