Timothy Fosu-Mensah facing club vs country row

Timothy Fosu-Mensah’s progress at Manchester United could stall due to international commitments.

The Dutch 18-year-old has made three sub appearances and one start – against Watford – for Louis van Gaal’s Reds since February.

He would be in line to go on United’s recently announced pre-season tour of China in July when they will play Borussia Dortmund on July 22 and City three days later in Beijing.

But the Netherlands are on the brink of qualifying for the Under-19s European Championships in Germany between July 11 and 24.

Success at that tournament would mean he would likely have to miss out on United’s warm-up preparations for the new season.

“I’ve no idea which Netherlands team I’ll be in at the end of the season. I’m just trying to do my best. I don’t mind which team, even if it’s Netherlands under-18,” he said.

“I have to make steps and I’m trying to improve myself. My debut gave a great feeling; I was very happy and a lot of people reacted, like friends, family and also players of Netherlands under-19.”
