Legendary striker Denis Law is backing both Manchester United and Manchester City to finish in the top four on the Premier League table this season.
United prepare to square off against City at the Etihad Stadium this weekend following their Europa League clash with Liverpool on Thursday and the derby holds a lot of weight in the race for a place in the Champions League.
Law has talked up the importance of the game but believes that both Manchester teams will be finishing in the Premier League top four this campaign despite the fact his former clubs currently sits in sixth position, four points in arrears of City.
The Scotsman said at the launch of United’s global sponsorship deal with Gulf Oil International: “I don’t think the derby is make-or-break. Of course it has always been an important game, a tough game and whoever wins will get the benefit. But there are so many games to go.
“It is an important game, it always was and always will be, but there are so many games left. I think both of them will make the Champions League places.
“I know United have not had a particularly great time in a few of the games but I am sure that both teams will be in the top four and in the Champions League, I would have a couple of Scottish pounds on that, maybe a bit more.
“United have had some results which have not been great but at the same time they have done well in others. It’s a hard profession and you have 20 teams in that league and it’s a battle.
“Everyone is battling so we have seen some strange results this season, up and down the league and that means that the standard is higher for a great many of the teams in the Premier League.”
