Manchester United get Everton in FA Cup semi-final, must beat West Ham to go through

Manchester United will need to beat West Ham United away from home in a replay to reach the FA Cup semi-finals. If they finish victors in the last ever FA Cup game at Upton Park, they’ll face Everton at Wembley.

The tie, whether it will be Manchester United or West Ham involved, will take place in late April.

Anthony Martial scored late on for Louis van Gaal’s side to earn a replay after an end-to-end second half at Old Trafford. West Ham’s star man Dimitri Payet scored a stunning free-kick that curled in off the left post to give the Irons the lead in the 68th minute. He had been practicing long after his teammates went back to the dressing room after the warm-up and it paid off with one of the best goals of this year’s FA Cup going past David de Gea.

Van Gaal’s side were the better side for the majority of the game but the failure to create and take chances led to them going down from Payet.

United played Everton in the semi-final just seven years ago. A 0-0 draw saw the tie go to penalties with Everton coming out 4-2 winners. The Toffees have a reputation as United’s bogey teams in recent years, with a title defence collapsing against the Blues a few years ago.

In 11 FA Cup ties between United and Everton, there have been just 16 goals. Everton have come out on top on six occasions, including that penalty victory at Wembley, but United thrashed Roberto Martinez’ side in the league at Goodison Park earlier in the season, with Wayne Rooney scoring against his former club.

Should United get through, captain Rooney may be available again. He’s currently recovering from a long term knee injury. Louis van Gaal’s side must, of course, beat West Ham to allow Rooney a chance to play at Wembley again.
