Memphis Depay has admitted that he has failed to live up to the expectation since he moved to Manchester United in the summer from PSV Eindhoven for £25million.
Memphis has only managed to score the six goals so far for United this season which is a low return for someone who was the Eredivisie’s top scorer last season.
Memphis, though, has vowed to prove his worth to United and show why they bought him.
Memphis, speaking at an event for sportswear firm Under Armour, said: “I haven’t yet lived up to everything people expected of me” which is true and he has been hammered by the United fans for costly goals against Stoke City and Chelsea this season.
Memphis continued to say, “I will fight to show what I can do. I have a lot of expectations of myself, and it will come” which is exactly what United fans and manager Louis van Gaal will want to hear from the winger.
On Monday night against Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup, there were fans who were asking what Memphis was doing when he kept shooting over the bar.
The problem that causes is Memphis will then go into his shell and not do what he is best at and that’s to be confident and score amazing goals.
Memphis knows he must learn quickly or lose his place at United saying, “you have to learn from your mistakes and keep working hard to improve” and if he sorts out the mistakes and gains his confidence then he will be a great player for United for the years to come.
Memphis hasn’t had a long run in the side this season which any player would struggle to come to terms with, but when he has played he hasn’t done all that great.
The hope though now is with Wayne Rooney out for two months with injury is that he will come good and is only taking time to adjust to life in the Premier League.
