Since the news broke two weeks ago of Manchester United holding talks with free agent Jose Mourinho, the Portuguese has been on the lips of many a United fan.
For particular individuals on the playing staff however, his impending arrival could see others go in the opposite direction.
Mourinho is nothing if not a stickler for his philosophies and his recruitment process – should he take over from current incumbent Louis van Gaal – will likely follow similar lines.
The potential appointment has reportedly left the United dressing split firmly down the middle. One member of note is likely to be Juan Mata.
The Spanish playmaker was shown the door at the beginning of his predecessor’s second term at Chelsea, in favour of his current position with The Red Devils.
Mata’s refusal to regularly track back for his side was thought to be the straw that broke the camel’s back in West London.
Despite his ability is to do so during his time in Manchester under Van Gaal’s typically guarded playing style, should Mourinho walk through the doors at Carrington, the 27 year-old’s future at United must surely be in doubt.
In regard to that, reports have now surfaced that suggest the Portuguese has instructed his team to move both Mata and Marouane Fellaini on.
These two names are likely to be only part of a possible mass re-structuring on the field. Others corners of the media have suggested a move back to his native land, however after the rash of players moving to Asia for lucrative offers, Mata may yet be set for pastures new,
Whilst Mata has become a United favourite, Fellaini has yet to have etched his named into the hearts and minds under Van Gaal.
Mourinho tends to plump for the more mobile individuals and despite his awkwardness to defend against, his ways are unlikely to curry favour.
Other names in the frame to leave the club would surely be Memphis Depay, returning to the defensive aspect of Mourinho’s approach.
All too often the £27m man has conceded possession in his own half, which is sure to irk his potential new boss.
Memphis’ lack of contribution at the opposite end of the field has led to mere bit parts for United since his move from PSV Eindhoven.
With only two league goals to his name thus far, the attractions for Mourinho would be few and far between.
Mourinho favours recruiting the finished articles, leaving the youth set up to merely exist on the fringes of the first team. As such, Jesse Lingard and Ashley Young may also find themselves out in the cold.
For the moment, any discussion of potential departures from Manchester United are moot.
However as every day passes, the conveyor belt of pressure is ramped up on Louis van Gaal. It is then that the era of Jose Mourinho may begin to take form, with some drastic changes.
