Manchester United delivered Jose Mourinho a victory on debut at Wigan Athletic today.
Goals after halftime from Will Keane and Andreas Pereira earned the visitors a comfortable 2-0 win.
Mourinho handed new signings Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly starts, along with fit-again Luke Shaw. Wigan, meanwhile, had former United midfielder Nick Powell on the bench.
Armenia midfielder Mkhitaryan, sporting the No10 shirt, produced a superb first 45 minutes for his new club. He carved out a wonderful chance for Memphis Depay before almost going close himself with a long range drive.
United dominated the opening half, but failed to really work Latics goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen.
But after the break, United jumped to an early lead after a massive howler from the Wigan veteran.
The Finn had his clearance charged down by Juan Mata, who played in Keane for a simple tap in to give the hosts the lead.
Pereira fired United to a 2-0 lead after a free-kick from Ashley Young fell for him. The Brazilian spun and shot in one movement to crash home a wonder goal in front of the new manager. As good as Mkhitaryan was in the first-half, Pereira was United’s major influence in the second period.
Powell was a late substitute for Wigan and put in some meaty challenges on his former teammates – though only after a stamp from Mata.
Interestingly, Mourinho gave Guillermo Varela and Sam Johnstone minutes, with both players in talks to leave the club in the coming days. Tyler Blackett also saw action in the second-half with his status clouded.
“I was very happy with the performance,” Mourinho told MUTV at the final whistle.
“They’ve started thinking about football the way I think. I saw a lot of good things and some things we’ve been doing on the training pitch.
“I was happy to see the fans. It was fantastic. They know if they support us they will get the most from me.”
