Mourinho: Man Utd have work to do after ‘bad pre-season’

Jose Mourinho is expecting his Manchester United team to improve dramatically even after clinching their first piece of silverware under his reign.

The Red Devils defeated Premier League champions Leicester City 2-1 in the Community Shield at Wembley to kickstart the 2016/17 season in winning fashion but there is still plenty of work to do according to Mourinho who feels it has been a subpar lot of summer preparations.

“I think it’s an important victory but of course we have lots of work to do,” he said on BT Sport and MUTV.

“I would be not ambitious if I say that we had a fantastic performance because it was not a fantastic performance. It was a possible performance for this moment of the season.

“Some of these guys today they have one week of training – (Anthony) Martial, (Zlatan) Ibrahimovic, (Marouane) Fellaini. The other ones had two weeks, no pre-season in China, a very bad pre-season, so I think step by step we are changing, but I think it’s always important to start with a trophy.”

Jesse Lingered opened the scoring for United with a fine individual goal in the 32nd minute before Jamie Vardy levelled 20 minutes prior to Ibrahimovic’s headed winner in the 83rd minute.
