Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has annually been linked with the no.1 jersey at Real Madrid, but after failed moves and improperly filed paperwork, the Spaniard remains at Old Trafford.
Los Blancos manager Zinedine Zidane’s latest comments, may now suggest a cooling of interest, regarding the man who was earmarked as the heir-apparent to Iker Casillas between the sticks at Santiago Bernabeu.
Since taking over in the Spanish capital following Rafael Benitez’ sacking just a few short days into 2016, the former French midfield maestro has brought back the swashbuckling nature of the team, scoring four or more goals on five occasions since taking up the reins.
In the goalkeeping department, Real continue to encounter issues in so far as clean sheets go, but their current keeping pool is enough for Zidane. Keylor Navas and Kiko Casilla are sharing the onus in the Real goal, but Navas is his first choice.
Zidane has now come out in support of his current crop. The Frenchman has spoken also of the future of former cross-city stopper for Atletico Madrid, de Gea, stating via ESPN FC:
“I am not thinking about that at all. I do not know what will happen at the end of the season,” said Zidane.
He went on to say: “I can tell you I’m very happy with the keepers I have, not just Keylor [Navas] who is playing, but with Kiko and Ruben also”.
[Then] “we will see at the end of the season”
Zidane’s words are guarded and perhaps rightly so. Despite the fact his tenure as Madrid boss is just over two months old, club President Florentino Perez continues to weigh up his options going forward.
Zidane has also even mooted that he may not even be around come the summer. If that were to be the case, the new incumbant may yet backtrack on his predecessor’s comments.
It seems once again that under the surface, David de Gea still garners great interest.
