Meulensteen says ‘something now clicking’ at Old Trafford and backs United’s League title charge

Manchester United supporters are right to be excited about their Premier League title prospects this season, according to Rene Meulensteen.

Having added Romelu Lukaku, Nemanja Matic and Victor Lindelof to their ranks over the summer, United kicked off the new campaign with a 4-0 win over West Ham on Sunday.

It was a hugely impressive opening day display and Meulensteen reckons Jose Mourinho – in his second year in charge – has assembled a squad well capable of mounting a charge for top spot.

The Dutch coach, who helped the club win numerous titles in two spells as part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s staff at Old Trafford, said: “They looked very strong,

“They have made some good signings in line with what Mourinho wants. They have got a lot of pace, they have got a lot of directness, a lot of strength and I thought yesterday they kept going, they kept creating and 4-0 was a fair result.

“You look at Manchester United’s starting position and every single player knows what they want and what they have to do, which is challenging for the title, winning the Premier League and doing well in the Champions League.

“A little bit similar to Chelsea last year, they came off a poor season so the players afe very focused. They have not got much to want and ask for. They just have to perform when they are asked to perform.

“Mourinho has got vast experience at many big clubs and I think he has got a really good blend and a good mix now.

“You can sense it. There is something now clicking together.

“They have brought some good players, they have matured and there is a certain purpose about them.”
