Rooney is vital but will have to show fitness to warrant Euro2016 spot – England boss Hodgson

England national manager Roy Hodgson has claimed that Wayne Rooney remains a vital member of his squad, but he will have to prove his fitness to warrant a spot on the plane for Euro2016.

The England skipper, who is currently nursing a knee injury, is expected to be missing from action until April and will then need to find form before Hodgson picks him for this summer’s Euros in France.

Hodgson said: “There is no way I should be looking to dismiss a Wayne Rooney who is fit and playing football on the basis he is out of form, because he is our captain and a captain is important and there are 23 players,”

“What he has to try and do is get fit so I can pick him, then show enough form to demand a place.”
