Souness: I would replace Mourinho with Giggs

Graeme Souness has suggested that Manchester United should appoint Ryan Giggs as a replacement for Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho is under intense pressure after Man United’s winless run extended to four games with a goalless draw against Valencia in the Champions League.

Many fans and pundits have called for Mourinho to be sacked and replaced with Zinedine Zidane, but Souness offered a more surprising suggestion in Giggs.

The Wales head coach spent a brief period as United’s caretaker manager after David Moyes’ sacking in 2014, and Souness told Virgin Media Sport that he believes Giggs would be the right kind of person for the club to build around if Mourinho leaves.

He said: “I wouldn’t go with Zidane.

“I don’t think they want another big one given a short space of time to get it right.

“If I was having a say, I would be looking at, sounds daft, Ryan Giggs.

“Someone that will be given more time going forward to get it right.

“It doesn’t have to be a spending splurge again.

“It has to be someone this time round that will be given time because of his affection and his history with the football club.

“They’ve tried Van Gaal, they’ve tried Moyes, who knew his way in the Premier League.

“They’ve gone for arguably the biggest name in Mourinho and it’s been an unmitigated disaster just spending big money chasing it.

“And that’s when you make mistakes.”

Giggs was a candidate to take over from Louis van Gaal in 2016, but Mourinho was ultimately chosen instead.

Mourinho, meanwhile, has found an unlikely ally in former England goalkeeper David Seaman, who has explained why the United boss should be kept on.
