Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has dismissed the claims that the Gunners were defeated by an academy side on Sunday
United academy product Marcus Rashford scored a brace in the 3-2 win for the Red Devils at Old Trafford which prompted some critics to suggest the Gunners had been beaten by kids.
In fact, Rashford was the only youngster to start for the Red Devils while Tim Fosu-Mensah came on 10 minutes into the second half and James Weir was an injury-time sub, indicating to Wenger that the criticism was wrong.
When asked if Arsenal were defeated by a team of Academy players, Wenger said: “Let’s not go overboard – they still had a few millions on the pitch today, from (David) De Gea to the whole of the midfield (Juan Mata, Memphis Depay, Morgan Schneiderlin, Ander Herrera and Jesse Lingard).
“They spent a lot of money on Depay – you cannot call him a player from the academy.”
