Zlatan Ibrahimovic has re-signed for Manchester United, agreeing a one-year contract and being handed the number 10 shirt.
He’s currently recovering from a serious knee injury sustained in April, but once he returns to fitness, he’ll be vying for a place in the starting line-up.
The arrival of Romelu Lukaku has somewhat complicated his place in the team, so we took a look at how the pair could both slot into Jose Mourinho’s XI.
Read on to see three possible formations featuring Lukaku and Ibrahimovic up top.
In a 3-5-2 formation:
Mourinho toyed with a back three towards the end of last season, before re-establishing a back four over pre-season and at the start of the new campaign. If the Portuguese manager wants to pack his midfield to accomodate Lukaku and Ibrahimovic, however, a three-man defence could be his strongest option.
Juan Mata, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial would be the players on the bench battling to get into the attack and illustrate the notable strength in depth Mourinho has to his squad this term.
In a 4-3-1-2 formation:
Ander Herrera, despite an excellent last season, has fallen behind Nemanja Matic in the pecking order so might relish the introduction of a three-man midfield, playing alongside the club’s summer signing and Paul Pogba.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who already has a tally of four assists from the opening two games, could again start in the number 10 role, given the duty of creating for Lukaku and Ibrahimovic.
In a 4-4-2 formation:
It would be a surprise if Mourinho fielded this formation, with managers long having moved on from the tradition of 4-4-2, but it shouldn’t be ruled out now that there are two strikers of the highest quality wanting to start.
Pogba and Matic are the favoured pair in midfield, so it’s in the wide positions that could prove most difficult to fill for the United manager.
