Manchester United are determined to lure John Stones from Everton this month.
According to RMC Sport, the Red Devils have made the 21-year-old Toffees centre-back their priority in the winter transfer window.
Chelsea have made no secret of their desire to sign Stones, making a number of bids in the summer, and now United plan to challenge their Premier League rivals in the chase for the England international.
Everton boss Roberto Martinez has repeatedly said Stones is not for sale but at the right price, being reported at around £50million, the Merseyside outfit may be tempted to sell.
Louis van Gaal is eager to bring a quality central defender to Old Trafford to keep the wolves at the door, in the form of the United faithful, who are calling for his head following a recent run of poor results.
It is also believed that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich will again go after the former Barnsley young gun who is rapidly emerging as one of the most talented centre-halves in Europe.
